Hardwood Floors 101: Types of Hardwood Floorings to Choose From

Can’t seem to decide which type or design of hardwood floors that you should be installing in your home? Well, you are not alone in this dilemma; in fact, there are those who really struggle in making a decision especially after finding out that there are several types or versions of hardwood flooring installations that one can choose from. But to save yourself from all of the stress, you should make sure that you are familiar, not necessarily having an in-depth knowledge, of the different types and compositions of flooring panels made of hardwood. This will help you come up with the perfect choice or have an idea of which to choose from, when you get to the home depot to buy your supplies.

Types of Hardwood Floors

Technically, there are only two types of hardwood floors that designers, decorators and homeowners will find in the market. But under these two types come several versions of hardwood floorings, which can make your decision making process a bit more difficult, especially if you are not familiar with each. Here are the ones that you should include in your checklist of options:

1.    Solid Hardwood Floors – these are solid panels of wood which can be placed directly on the ground or over a wood panel. Each panel is composed of one piece of wood which is formed to have a groove and a tongue on each side which will make installation easier and faster. Solid hardwood floorings can either come finished or unfinished. One amazing thing about this type of flooring is its flexibility in terms of finishes and remodeling. In case your flooring starts to fade, you can easily re—finish the surface and voila! You now have a floor installation that looks like you’ve just had it installed.

a.    Solid Oak Floors – this type if considered to be the most common type under the solid hardwood floors category. You can choose the finish, graining and knots based on your taste or your theme.

2.    Engineered Hardwood Floors – these hardwood installations are perfect for those who are trying to save money without sacrificing the resilience and aesthetics of your home. These floors are usually made of three to four sheets or plies of wood, pieced together through lamination, to create a solid and sturdy wooden floor panel. These are more versatile since they are lightweight and really easy to install. You can choose to have the following depending on how much your budget is and how large your room is.

a.     Long strip planks

b.    Short strip planks
